Macau has received 2.27 million visitors in September, beating Hong Kong's visitation for the month by 145,000.
Overall visitor statistics for 2007 reveal Macau will possibly surpass Hong Kong arrivals for the year, according to reports in the Macao Daily News. The report says the reason for the city's strong visitor numbers in September could be due to the opening of the mega casino-hotel resort, the Venetian.
The visitors to Macau in September however were mostly local areas with only 9.1 per cent from foreign countries or regions.
High hotel rates and an average low skill factor remain as obstacles for Macau's tourism industry according to the report.
