Guangzhou is striving to be recognized as a National Hygienic City. On Friday, September 21st, a patriotic public health campaign, for the first time, was performed in the city. Relevant officials said that from then on, the third Friday of each month would become a clean-up day when citizens would be organized to clean up the city.
Sources from the Guangzhou Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported that in August, the density of mosquitoes, rats, flies and cockroaches was reduced by 48.85%, 89.78%, 112.66% and 767.39% respectively, compared with July 2007. As a result, the hygiene and environment have been greatly improved. In addition, the relevant departments are responsible for dealing with complaints about organizations or work entities that slack off and any place where disease vectors breed.
